Alexia Calvillo shares her story at special assembly

As a lead-up to our Girls for the Cure Walk to be held September 24th, this year's student committee organized a special event at our school as a prelude and rallying focus for our upcoming walk. We were honoured to have Alexia Calvillo (wife of Montreal Alouettes' quarterback Anthony Calvillo) speak to our entire student group.

On Friday September 11th, Mrs. Calvillo, addressed over three hundred girls, faculty, staff and administrators at Sacred Heart as she shared her journey of living with cancer over the last two years. Alexia, full of emotion, spoke candidly and recounted her story in dealing with her diagnosis, treatment, the effects on her family, and her current health situation.  There were few dry eyes in the house. After her very personal and moving talk, our students posed numerous questions, all of which Alexia answered tirelessly and with incredible openness.

Mrs. Calvillo's message of hope came through loud and clear: personal strength, support of family, commitment to community, and our collective determination to beat this disease in its many forms will bring about a cure though awareness, fundraising and research efforts.

Ms. Mary Gendron then made a special dedication. This year we will be walking in memory of Carmen Antonini, our teacher, coach, colleague and friend whom we lost last year.

Congratulations to our Girls for the Cure Committee and, in particular, to Amanda Hindley for her initiative in having Mrs. Calvillo join us. Outstanding job!

We extend our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Calvillo for the remarkable gift she shared with us.

Special thanks as well to Daniele Hamamdjian of CTV Montreal News who covered the story. Watch the video of the related CTV News report.
